What Was That Unexplained Fog or Smoke?

One of the most mysterious examples of paranormal phenomena is strange fog or smoke. The appearance of such an unusual cloud—especially if it is strangely colored or has no apparent natural cause—may signal the presence of something otherworldly such as a ghost or a spirit. Mysterious fog and smoke are also associated with vanishings. For example, in 1952, pilot John Baldwin was flying through the skies over Korea when he allegedly entered a strange cloud and disappeared. Such experiences, surprisingly, are not as uncommon as many people might think.

Personal Accounts

To get a sense of how strange it is when fog or smoke appears from out of nowhere, just read this personal account from Kelly:

"My husband and I witnessed a strange phenomenon. We were sitting in our living room. Just then a puff of smoke or fog rushed between us, stopped in front of our faces, swirled up, and quickly vanished. I asked him, 'Did you see that?' He responded, 'Yes, but I don't know what that was!' We don't smoke...no open windows. It came out of nowhere. To me it was definitely a spirit. My husband lost his grandmother at the end of October; he was really close with her. I wonder if it was her telling us she's in the afterlife. I would like to know, but I'm not willing to do something to cause my family harm."

This is a very peculiar experience indeed. If Kelly and her husband were smokers or outdoors, we might be able to come up with a rational explanation for this strange smoke or fog. But the fact that it appeared unexpectedly in their home with no open windows makes this a real mystery. Also, the way Kelly describes the substance moving—stopping right in front of her face before disappearing—makes it sound as if it were under intelligent control. Although we cannot conclude with certainty that this was ghost phenomena, we certainly cannot dismiss it either. There may be no way of knowing for sure.

Possible Explanations

The encounter described above, though strange, should not be a cause for concern. There was nothing in it to indicate that it was harmful or in any way threatening. If it was a ghost or a spirit, it was just letting Kelly and her husband know it was there.

Sometimes the appearance of unexplained fog or smoke is a one-time, isolated incident. You may never see it again—or you may experience other paranormal phenomena in your home. If you do experience other phenomena, it may be evidence of ghosts or a haunting. In that case, you should consult with a paranormal expert to find ways to cleanse your home and ensure that you are no longer troubled by spirits.

If you have recently lost a loved one, consider the possibility that the strange fog or smoke is a signal from the departed, a communication from the other side. Such phenomena have been known to occur at funerals and in the homes of the recently deceased. If that is the case, there is no reason to be frightened of the fog or smoke.
