This is one of a few things that has happened to me, but it's by far one of the creepiest. A few years back (2009 or 2008, I can't be sure), I was camping with my family and my friend's family on the outskirts of Western Australia.
It was all nice and normal for a day (unless you count a mouse going through our bags), but the next night, that all changed. I was going to the toilet block with my friend, and as we entered we saw this weird bug -- actually, it looked more like a beetle -- on the wall. It was big (a little larger than a 50-cent piece), black and green/orange, but it had really creepy pale blue eyes, Which is freaky on an insect!
After we'd done our business, we were washing our hands when we heard this creepy electronic-type noise. It sounded like "kiiiiiilllll... kiiiiiilllll..." repeated over and over again. My friend and I turned around to discover it was the bug!
We were terrified, suspecting it was either possessed or some type of evil robot. My friend got a wad of paper hand towels and I snuck up and slammed them down on top of the bug.
But the damn thing wasn't squished! Oh no! It was fighting to get out, still making that frealy noise. Suddenly, I had a rather bright idea, and scrunched the hand towels into a ball around the bug. I picked it up, with the thing still struggling inside, and ran outside. I ran, with my friend in pursuit, up to the main camp and, praying I wouldn't miss, threw the towel-wrapped bug into the fire!
It was quiet for about a minute, and I turned away, figuring that the bug had been burned to death. But suddenly I heard this awful, high-pitched electronic-type scream.
I jumped and turned back in time to see the bug's burning form begin to climb toward the edge of the fire. As it neared the edge, it was suddenly engulfed by a large burst of flame. As the bug finally withered, blackened and died, I swear I saw the fire momentarily flash green.
My friend and I have never spoken of this again.
