Unknown Creature at the Pond

I live in Sumter county in South Carolina. I would like to share something that happened to me last August, 2011. My land lady took a trip to Germany and I was asked to water her plants for the summer. She has large fields on three sides of her home. The field behind her house has two medium-size fishing ponds behind it. The banks of the ponds are very steep.

I work long hours and didn't get to her home until after 11 p.m. at night. I was watering the plants when I heard what sounded like a woman's scream. I automatically assumed someone had been fishing and had fallen down one of the banks and hurt herself.

I hollered back asking if she needed help. The answer wasn't what I expected. It was a low growl. I could hear it even though the ponds were more than two football fields in length from where I was. The growl was deep, but not loud.

What happened next sent me running to my van. The grass in the field is like a saw grass. It grows very fast and gets over waist high. I could hear something moving through the grass very fast. I ran back to the van as fast as I could. I had left it running because I wasn't going to be long. I jumped into the van, put it into reverse and aimed the lights onto the field.

As I did, I saw something very tall, greenish brown colored step over a four-foot fence and disappear into the trees about 50 feet in front and to the left of my van. It did not appear to be hairy to me, but I can't really be sure. It had long, thin legs and what appeared to be a short, thick tail. I couldn't see its head from the tree limbs.

I would like to know if anyone else has had any kind of experience like this. In this or any other area. I am a single father of two boys and I am not one to fly to fancy. I felt a since of dread about what ever that was. I felt like it wanted to hurt me. I was happy I got to that van.
