Not at all unusual. I had a toy dog - a Shih Tzu -that I would bring to work with me, which was in a kiosk with a glass sliding door entry. One very quiet evening around 11:30 pm, my dog started growling at the door, and then proceeded to back up - not just turning around, but walking backwards - while facing the glass door, until he was against the wall on the opposite side of the kiosk. I saw and heard nothing, but stepped outside just to make sure. I sensed nothing, but my dog continued to growl against the wall. Obviously he saw something. He also did the same thing once in the bedroom of the triplex I lived in (where I heard a British man's voice once call my name on another occasion).
Your advice for the author
I doubt that it is bugs in the walls or ceiling.
