SLIders & the Streetlight Phenomenon - feature article

Sunday May 25, 2008
Do streetlights go out when you pass beneath them? The phenomenon is known as street lamp interference, or SLI, and it possibly is a psychic event that is just beginning to be recognized and studied. Like most phenomena of this type, the evidence is almost exclusively anecdotal. Typically, a person who has this effect on streetlights - also known as a SLIder - finds that the light switches on or off when he or she walks or drives beneath it. Very often, SLIders also report that they tend to have an odd effect on other electronic devices. Have you had this experience?

Once i was ridin past the cemetary on my 50cc moped and when i reached below the lamps light (its in the centre of the graveyard)the light went off…and i cursed…that instant my guitar tumbled down from the bike as also the Ampli-speaker combo…and i very nearly landed in the 2 metre deep field…
some lovers were cuddled in a corner under the banyan tree…and they rushed to help me….
it has happened ever since and i dont take much notice…my scientist friend says..its just the nature of a sodium vapour lamp to go off like that and start when it gets cooler…some long-timed bi-metalic strip contact i guess…
but the next time i was at my home-studio…the moment i touched the electrical bulbs switch….the lit bulb…jumped off its holder and fell on top of the bookshelf and bounced off the vinyl carpet..funny thing is …i put it back on the holder…5 feet up the wall..and it worked again…
many times later..till date…the moment i touch a light switch…the bulbs fuse..even new ones…the last being a new tube-lights choke…it started to melt…
i read that the fingertips generate a lot of electric current depending on the pottasium level in the body…i wonder….

Does this include… radio’s both dab and fm, computers (which is why this will take me approx half hour to post), televisions, buzzers – one in particular a buzzer for a block of appartments on my road beeps to let you enter the building every time i walk past with or without other people no matter what time day or night, it even happens when i pass it on the other side of the street (about 9-11ft away) – what info can i get on this?

(3) Krysteen says:

I have this happen alot. The streets lights go out along the driveway of my apartment complex. Not in a sequence/timer sort of way… just off or on as I pass by. Also, the security lights on the sides of the building go out when I walk under them. Random street lights go off on ocassion.

I’m a little more damaging to electronics when I’m angry. Bulbs in fixtures will just do the blue flash burn out, and I even “took out” my boyfriend’s computer when we were having a disagreement while on the telephone. He was multitasking while talking with me, and was online at the time. His computer just went HAYWIRE, smoke and all!!! HA HA HA… guess I’m a little more “partical charged” when I’m emotional.

The lights are the most comman, and happen almost every evening if I’m coming home after dark.

Krysteen and Kat..hello ..

say…does there feel on your skin..a strange pleasant tingling sensation..when this happens?
or any other feeling?

(5) Lee says:

perhaps significantly, this occured a lot in my early teens. i used to get a ‘feeling’ just before the streetlight i was about to go under would switch off – and it would every time. a very eerie feeling. on one memorable occassion i was cycling home one evening and i got a feeling the the lights would start switching off as i cycled by – and four in a row did!!!!
30 years later, it doesn’t seem to occur – but i do blow a LOT of lightbulbs.

(6) El Supercabras says:

This happens to me a lot – a ridiculous amount, really, whenever I’m out walking my dog. I can almost predict it now. Electronic devices tend to drain around me, too. I’ve never had a watch battery work properly. Same with paying Interac. I usually have to have the clerk swipe my card for me or it doesn’t work. Seems to happen to often to be chalked up to coincidence.

(7) Krysteen says:

Roque,

As for me, I have never noticed any skin sensations. I usually just realize that I am concentrating pretty intently on whatever has crossed my mind or happened during the day. Guess I’m just more focused, otherwise, nothing significant about it.

(8) Matt says:

Street lights are commonly on timers for energy conservation purposes. That means that some of them go out at certain times throughout the night to save a nickel here antd there. There is nothing supernatural about it, unfortunately. I am a skeptic, but am seeking the truth about paranormal phenomena. That is how I learned of this.

(9) Drupad Kanakia says:

yes…its quite shocking….every evening when i walk my dog….as soon as i pass under or am close to a particular street light…it shuts off…i found it to be particularly eerie and wierd….i never knew it was common

(10) Matt says:

I can’t tell you how many times this happens to me… I find it comes at different times but when it happens it might go on for a few days then stop for a couple of months. It used to freak me out but I started to think that something else might be up. I’m so happy this was sent to me by my sister. I always knew something was going on. I guess I’m not crazy :)

(11) Jose says:

Yes this has happened to me almost all of my life but I. just attributed it to the headlights of my vehicle, Since the streetlights are on sensors. So when the vehicle lights hit the sensors the streetlights go off. Also when I get near a radio it loses its frequency and it comes back when I get away from the radio. But when I’m under stress I get get shock when ever I touch metal. SO WHATS UP?

(12) Gayle Terrace says:

Whow great article… I have had a effect on street lamps for year,s. It seem’s to happen most when I am ‘highly emotional’ especially if i’m upset. I also can have problem’s with mobile phone’s. So delighted to see that i’m not the only one!!

(14) Dee White says:

I’m known to friends and family as a lightbulb popper. I will often go through periods (high energy? stress?)when I cause an awful lot of lightbulbs to explode when I turn them on–causing us to go through a lot of bulbs.

(15) Robyn says:

Enjoy and accept this ’strange’ condition. That’s all we can do. I can have an effect on electrical equipment (yes! you probably understand that it will not be just one unit but several – like a domino effect) Likely to occur when I am emotionally charged in some way. All I can add is that I am so glad our hospitals have a back up generator because it is not my plan to disrupt the flow of electricity.

(16) Lorraine says:

This has not happened to me, but my sister in law it happens to whenever she is driving at night and she is thinking about her son who passed away when he was 7. A drunk driver hit his aunts car while they were on their way to a saturday afternoon of bowling. He was the front seat passenger and his seatbelt severed his kidney. That was 13 years ago and till this day no matter where she is at night, it will only happen when she thinks of him. We feel it is a sign from him to her that he hears her and when it goes off, she always says ” I LOVE YOU TOO”. So maybe their are different reasons for different people why it happens. Just a thought, she is not affected by or to electrical objects like most of the others. I feel this one comes from Heaven.

(17) Sarah says:

Finally!! It’s all starting to make sense. It’s still a bit unnerving, but it’s making sense non the less. Tonight while out for a walk with the kids, I noticed not one, not two or three, but FOUR streetlights burn out as I passed underneath. I’ve lived out in the sticks for the past 7 years, and just recently moved back to the city (where there are streetlights). I’ve always noticed lightbulbs burn out rather quickly around me and it’s always been sort a phobia I guess you could call it. Well, tonight I decided to research this online when I found several pages about this phenomenon. Now it all seems to be coming together…the watches that stop working, the laptop that can’t be used without the cord (battery drains), the lightbulbs, the streetlights, the static on the phone all the time. YES YES YES…I’m not alone!!!

(18) Aura says:

I began to experience this phenomenon as a teenager. I could be driving or walking and the street lamp would turn off. I was told that a person with this ability gives off high kinetic energy. Interestingly, for the majority of my life, I have had experiences with paranormal phenomena. Could the two be connected?

(19) Nadine says:

This has been happening to me for over 2 years now but that is what i have been noticing. The other day a friend and I were sitting in her car at night. We were talking because i was really worried about a situation. Then we noticed that the street light we were sitting under flickered and completely shut off. When we noticed this i concentrated on the light more than my worry and it turn back on. To test this we started talking about my the worry and it shut back off. I was kinda freaked out because usually they would just shut off as i would pass but i was never able to control them with my nervious system or i just never noticed before. I think its kinda cool.

(20) Rachel says:

When I was little, I used to always tell people how much I hated when light posts go out when you walk under them. I didn’t realize that this could be an actual phenomenon I was experiencing, and that it doesn’t happen to everyone. This has been happening to me on a regular basis since I was like 12. Weird…!

(21) Emily says:

I have never noticed burning out street lamps, but I have never been able to wear watches. When I was a little girl, my mother bought me a watch and it lasted about a week. Ever since I have never had a watch last very long at all. Recently I have been more interested in my ‘condition’ so as an experiment I replaced the battery in the latest watch I bought (8 yrs ago-lasted a week) and this battery lasted only 18 hours! I was surprised for some reason. I dont really care about what is causing this to happen, I just want to know if there are any phyical side-effects, is it a sign of something more serious? I wish someone would do an extensive study on the effects of this condition. I cannot find answers anywhere.

(22) Emma says:

I’m so glad I found this page. Ever since I can remember I have blown lightbulbs when I’m angry/stressed/upset. I’m currently living alone in a house with 15ft ceilings and have blown almost every lightbulb over the past few months with a current stressful worklife. I’ve onl just begun to think that this is probably not very ‘normal’.

My mum also has always done this and I’ve never really thought about it much until recently when I was with a group of friends and it came up in conversation. They all thought I was making up stories and wouldn’t hear a bar of it. So I thought I’d do some research to see if it was just coincidence… I feel very relieved to say the least.

I thought that I was the only one that felt when they were about to turn on. Is there an actual phobia for street lights?

(25) Terry says:

I just found out I have a name :SLIder.
For many years I often wondered without fear, why street lights would turn off. I have learned over the years that it is me. When Im stressing. I can turn them off. Two weeks ago, I was to upset. Walking down my street, when one light turned off. I stopped and started to yell at the street light, three more lights turned off. I put my hands in the air walked quickly. As I passed all of the lights that had turned off; each turned back on.

(26) Cote says:

This has been happening to me for several years now. My wife has noticed it and we often joke about it when I knock out a streetlight. It is unpredictable and doesn’t happen all the time, but while visiting my mothers tonight, when I walked my dog I “put out” the same streetlight twice. This prompted me to get online and research this when I got home – I guess I’m not alone. Wish I knew what it’s all about. Haha, maybe we can harness this energy for the good of all mankind (or at least make some dough off it).

(28) mensatic says:

A friend of mine sent me a link to this article today and it blew my mind. After a lifetime of electromagnetic mayhem, I finally feel validated! I have an effect on street lights, house lights, copy machines, cash registers — and I’ve destroyed the electrical system in every car I’ve had so far. It would be wonderful to learn how to control such an ability since it seems to always be destructive or negative.
