Grandfather Doppelganger
by Chris B.
After reading some of the stories here about doppelgangers, I recalled something that happened to me about ten years ago while fishing, although at the time I wasn't sure what to make of it and simply passed it off as strange.
I was fishing at a favorite trout stream in Missouri. The day was beautiful, sunny, clear sky, picture perfect day to be out. While standing in the stream enjoying everything around me, an older gentleman walked up beside me and started fishing. I happened to glance over and my jaw fell wide open! He was the spitting image of my late grandfather, who had passed away nearly six years before. I almost went in the water because my knees buckled and felt as if they had turned to jelly.
After staring at him for several moments, he turned to me and spoke. He said, "Hi. How ya doin?" I apologized for staring and began to explain to him why. I told him that he looked exactly like my grandfather and wondered if he may have had a twin brother. The man said his name was Walter, which was also my grandfather's name. I thought, "Man, this is really getting weird." I asked where he was from. Did he know anyone in my family? Who were his relatives? Questions like that, and came up with nothing. He didn't know anyone that I was related to or anything about the area where my family lived. He probably thought I was mental or something.
After about ten minutes of conversation, we both said, "Nice talking to ya. Good luck fishing." Then he walked away. I was so awestruck by the encounter that I had to go back to my truck and sit down. While sitting there trying to figure out what just happened, I actually wept a few tears and thought about my grandfather. How nice it would have been to have him there fishing with me on such a fine day. Maybe he was.
