My Sister, Who Wasn't There
by Sandra Lee K.

When I was about 14, my father was working one night (fire fighter). My sister, seven years older, was out. My mother and I were home alone. Mom had locked up downstairs and was in the bathroom on the second floor. I was looking for my slippers and remembered I'd left them in my sister's room in the attic earlier that day.

The attic was one room and had a "half wall" along the staircase instead of a railing. She had a small lamp attached to the top of that, and to turn on the lamp, there was a string hanging down with a metal washer tied to it so it could be turned on from the bottom of the stairs. The first three steps were wedge-shaped and the rest above that were regular steps. I pulled the string and turned on the light. Then I started walking up the stairs. For some reason, I don't know why, I leaned forward a few steps from the top and peeked around the half-wall.

There across the room was my sister's single bed. She was standing on the other side of it. Her flannel nightie with blue flowers on it was laying on the bed. She picked it up and put it over her head and pulled down over herself. Then she pulled her long hair out of the back, pulled the collar out, and began to button the three buttons in the front. That's when I coughed, and my sister threw her hands up like I'd scared her half to death, and then she DISAPPEARED!

I screamed and ran downstairs to the second floor. My mother met me and asked why I'd screamed, and I told her! We went back up to the attic together and Mom looked under the bed. There was no place to hide up there, not even a closet. Mom was afraid it meant that something awful happened to my sister, but she came home later and was just fine.

I'm now 60. I've always wondered why I saw what I did. It wasn't just a flash of something, which could have been imaginary. I'd watched my sister getting ready for bed, which was a pretty normal thing. Do you have any ideas about what this may have meant?
