Family
Cat's Ghost
by Jess
Almost two years ago, the family cat passed away very suddenly. He was young and beautiful with the silkiest black coat you have ever seen. He was in good health, so we never even had a chance to say goodbye. Almost a year had passed since his death, and my family and I were aware that December 16th, the day of his passing, was fast approaching. But I was more aware of it than the others, I think. Although my whole family cared for him, I loved him like crazy.
When that day arrived, my family and I waited until 2:30, which was just a few minutes before my father had found his body on our porch, and went out to his gravesite as I had suggested to make a toast to our beloved cat. We stood there in the snow for a few moments in complete silence, our heads bowed and our eyes closed. I was thinking about how much I loved and missed him, and I felt a lump grow in my throat.
That's when we heard it – his distinctive meow. I thought I was hearing things, but I would have recognized that meow anywhere, and a year of absence hadn't changed that. Our eyes flew open and our heads jerked upwards. There he was, running towards us... but this time he was galloping a foot above the snowbanks beneath him. Makes sense – I guess you don't have to get your feet wet and cold in heaven.
None of us could believe our eyes... although, while my family stood rooted in shock and disbelief, I ran forward immediately and scooped him up like I'd so desperately longed for. I guess I was expecting him in a way... I knew this would happen sooner or later. I don't know how, but I knew. He was warm despite the cold weather, and he was just as I remembered him. As he purred into my ear, I felt tears running down my face, soaking his beautiful fur as he bunted my jaw like always. He seemed to smile at me and communicate that he was happy. Whether that meant that the food was really good up there, and that he could eat all that he wanted without puking, I don't know. But he was happy.
By this time my family had shaken off their initial shock, and had run forward as well. They surrounded me, each trying to pet him at once. I was pretty sure he would hiss, but he didn't. He let each of us have a turn holding and loving him one last time. But eventually, as cats are known to do, he decided that he had had enough. He pushed off of my mom's chest and landed delicately on the air above the snow below. I reached out to pet him one last time, and tearfully said goodbye. I knew that I would never see him again.
He began to walk away from us. I was sniffling a lot at this point, but I felt relieved and warmed to have finally gotten to say goodbye to my beloved cat. And then, right before our eyes, he faded away.
My family doesn't really like to talk about what happened, although I think that they are all glad that it happened. If any one of them was a skeptic about ghosts before this, they sure aren't now.
