Knocks and Smokes
by Claire
I have been encouraged to write to you as the house I live in has been host to various phenomena since I purchased it nine years ago. I would stress, though, that although I am aware that I share my home with "something unseen and not of this world," I have no problem with it being there as I know for sure it means me (or others) no harm.
These are just a couple of incidents: my house is on three levels. It is an old Victorian property. My sister was living with me at the time and was sleeping in the basement bedroom while I slept on the top floor bedroom, with a floor between us. At around five in the morning, there was a loud insistent knock on my door to which I woke suddenly and called out, "Come in," thinking it was my sister who couldn't sleep. There was no reply to this and so I thought she had decided to go back downstairs to bed. I went back to sleep.
The following morning I asked her over breakfast how she had slept. "Fine, if you hadn't knocked and woke me up at five this morning," she replied. The hairs, quite literally, stood up on the back of my neck. When I said I didn't and that she had knocked on MY door loudly at five we stared at each other shocked. My sister and I are twins and I feel sure something or someone wanted to get our attention for a particular reason. I have no idea what as I didn't voice this out loud, maybe I should have done!
A few months later, I was abroad for a couple of days and my mum stayed over mine to "house sit" my pets. She said she was sleeping downstairs and was woken by knocking on the bedroom door. She got up and walked into the hallway thinking I was ill and needing her help and called my name. There was no one there. It was then that she remembered I wasn't even in the house. I had not told her the previous incident with my sister. She said that that wasn't the first time that that had happened when she had stayed over, she just didn't like to mention it before!
On reviewing the history of my house, it appears that my basement room and adjoining room were rented out to a Mr. Newman at the turn of the century. Both myself, my partner and friends who have slept in there have smelled cigarette smoke very strongly in that bedroom even though it is non-smoking household. We have also taken photos of "orbs" in the room and have heard sighing and deep breathing. There was no record of him after 1918, so presume he may have died during WWI and that is who still sleeps and smokes in there, in another life!
