Fairy Castle
by Dreamer24

Most people my age don't even consider the existence of fairies and elves to be true. But I think otherwise. You see, for a long while my eyes were opened to a beautiful and unbelievable world. It began only a few weeks after my family moved to Pennsylvania. Being only eight at the time, I was in the backyard playing with some of my toys when I looked over and saw a very small woman, only about three inches high. She had a flowing white dress on and her hair was reddish brown; whether or not it was tied up I do not recall.

I had exceptional knowledge for my age and I ran inside immediately shouting with great excitement, "Mom, dad! I saw a fairy! I SAW A FAIRY!" My mother had seen a fairy as a child and she believed me. I've never been sure if my dad did; it was hard to tell if he thought I was just playing a game of sorts and that he should go along with the ride.

I went back outside not too long after and slowly I could see and understand their world more and more. I told only my immediate family and a few close friends, whose names I will leave anonymous. My friends were a bit skeptical at first, but then they could see them too. We built fairy houses out of natural materials. We helped them decorate for festivals. I know it sounds like a made-up child's game; I know it sounds like a few girls with overactive imaginations, and that's what I feared too, but there are some things that I could not explain.

Here is one. My friend and I were having a sleep over at my house. We decided to go outside and play a bit. Snow had fallen only a few days earlier. My friend ran ahead of me and ran away to where I could no longer see her. But something caught my eye. One of the mounds of snow was carved into a shape. I stopped running and looked closer.

It was a castle! I very small castle! Every detail was perfectly carved. The windows had bits of clear ice in them! It was like a dream. But it wasn't. I showed it to my mom. She was amazed. That's only one thing. For a while, I understood a world mankind had lost track of long ago. I understood beautiful elfen princesses, wars invisible to us, everything imaginable.

But I was growing up, and we both knew I had to leave. I sit here typing trying to remember the amazing creatures they told me of, the wondrous places, but it's all slipping away. I'm almost 13 now. I tell no one in fear they would think I was lying, or that it was all my imagination. Though I can see it no longer, I know a wonderful world exists that many cannot see, and no matter how much time goes by, I will always believe in that secret world we hid from ourselves so long ago, and I will always hold it close to my heart.
