Witch
in the Mirror
by Kristin
This is a story that my mother told me about something that happened to a best friend of hers. She said that she was near the room when it happened. When they were all teenagers in high school, my mom, her sisters, some friends of theirs, and herself had been into practicing witchcraft. My mom wasn't that into it because it tended to scare her, while her sisters and especially her best friend (we'll call her Ellie) were more into it. They would shop at a witchcraft/magic store, do spells, hold seances. My mom said that some people at school thought they, the group, were a little creepy, but nothing extreme.
Ellie, however, was probably the one that was the most into it; she would practice things by herself without the others sometimes. Well, there was this house that connected to theirs that my mom's dad owned, and he would let them live in it, since their regular house was right next door. They had just gotten done holding a seance in this house one day, and everyone that had joined them had already left. The only ones still there in this house were my mother, her two sisters, and my mom's best friend, Ellie. My mom and her two sisters had migrated into the kitchen (which was right next to and visible from the living room), just hanging out and talking.
Ellie, however, was still in the living room. She was standing in front of a mirror, concentrating. I don't think my mom and her sisters knew what she was doing at the time. They were just hanging out in the kitchen. All of a sudden, Ellie comes running from the living room and dashes out of the house, screaming. Startled, my mom and her sisters run after her, having no idea what's going on. When they catch up to her, she's saying to them, "Don't break the mirror! Don't break the mirror!"
She then runs all the way home. They found out later that apparently Ellie had been attempting to summon a witch from out of the mirror, probably just to see if it would work. She said that as she was sitting there, concentrating, eventually a hand reached out of the mirror and grabbed her arm, as if it was trying to pull to her in! My mom even saw the burn marks left on Ellie's arm from where the hand had grabbed her. None of them did anymore practicing after that, and they didn't even want to go into the house again.
They moved back into their regular house, and they never told my mom's parents what happened there. The strange thing is my mom's father had a lot of trouble keeping that house sold after that. He would sell it to someone, but they would only keep it for a little bit and then move out. He then would sell it to someone else, but the same thing would happen. This house would be sold with all the furniture already in it, including the mirror in the living room. My mother believes that her friend haunted the mirror, and that she hadn't wanted it broken for fear that the thing inside might get out. To this day, Ellie and my mom's sisters still don't talk about what happened.
