Phantom Accident
by Jennifer R.

It was about 11.30 p.m. I cannot remember what day it was, but it was an alright evening. I was walking home up Kingsland High Street, which is quite an unsavory place to be walking at that time of night, so I had my wits about me (so I thought) and was aware of what was around me. As I turned the corner, onto my road, I saw a man get hit by a car and fall to the ground. His head was bleeding and everyone was scurrying around, so I turned around to go to the phone box, which was about 15 steps around the corner. I called an ambulance and explained what I saw. They said they were on their way. As I went back around the corner, the road was empty. This was a road that is never empty - not even at 3.00 a.m. There is a night club on this road, and it is in the middle of Stoke Newington, an area with a very busy night life, but I live on the road and know that there is never a time when the road was clear of cars. I went back to the phone box to check to see if I had actually made the call. I had and cancelled the ambulance. As I went to go back round this corner, again, this time to go into my house, the road had its normal couple of cars on it. What happened? This incident has haunted me for years.
