Backyard Tombstone
by Sara McNeil

I was very young, seven or so, and I lived in a very old house with my two sisters and parents. This house was very old and we were just renting it. There was a tombstone in the backyard. No grave, just the tombstone. It took a few months before unusual things would happen, but once it started, it was like "they" were saying the game is on.

There were the obvious phenomena, like windows opening, water being turned on and off, faces in shadows and windows, but mostly lights mysteriously turning on and off. My parents thought it was my doing because ever since we moved in I'd had trouble sleeping. They thought I was scared and turning the lights on to feel more comfortable. Then one night while I was tossing and turning, my overhead light came on. I even heard the light switch and thought it was my mother, but it was a little girl I had never seen before! My closet and my mother's were connected, so I ran through the closet to her room and woke her up. All of the lights in the house were on, but the girl was gone. They thought I was lying!

Then my mother had an experience. She was in the living room studying when my little sister's rocking chair began to rock. She thought a rat hit it or something, but it kept rocking like somebody was in it. Scared to death, she just sat there, watched it rock, and then it was as if whoever was there got up and the chair slowly stopped rocking.

I have many more stories but I'll give you the brief. On my birthday, my aunt saw a HEADLESS woman in our front yard by our trampoline. She drove pass our yard many times, and we watched with no idea what she was doing. Finally she darted inside and told us. At one point, my mom and step-dad were in the driveway in their truck talking. With the keys sitting on the dash, the windows started going up and down, the doors locking and unlocking (they weren't automatic door locks either) and the headlights were flashing.

I saved the best for last. There was a second older house 20 feet from the one we were living in that the landlord let us use for storage. Being curious little girls, my sisters and I were fascinated with the second house. One day, we were in what I would say is the master bedroom or whatever. There were fake blue and yellow flowers ont he window sill that had obviously been there for a while. I put them in my hair and turned to my sisters who were WHITE. I said, "What?" No reply. I started to freak and frantically scream, "What's wrong?" My oldest sister started to cry and pointed behind me. I turned and it was a young beautiful woman standing there just looking at me. Needless to say, I dropped the flowers at her feet and ran! Shortly after that, my mom saw Confederate soldiers on our front porch!

That was all it took to make my parents break the lease and move. No one has moved back into that house since. I'll drive by it sometimes, and for some WEIRD reason I want to go inside. I'm not scared any more (easy to say when I don't live there) and I want to go back. I want to know the story about the people who lived there before me, and it drives me crazy not knowing. It's like an amazing cliff hanger ending.
