Wackiness Near Waco
by Kathy Dirickson

This happened to me and my sister Sharon in the summer of 1996. My nephew had broken his leg at my house, a four-wheeling accident, and I went with my sister to take him to her home in Grandbury, Texas. I lived between Bryan, Texas and Hearne, Texas. It takes about three and a half hours, driving an average of 65 miles an hour to get to Grandbury from where I lived. We left my house around 9 p.m. My sister had just gotten a new car. This was actually only her second trip in it of any distance. My nephew was asleep in the back seat.

We stopped in Waco, Texas and got a cup of coffee and donuts. We had turned off of Interstate 35 onto a farm to market. We had been on the farm to market for about 20 minutes when her car would not go over 15 miles an hour, no matter what she did. A few minutes after this, I noticed that the fences had disappeared. Anyone in this part of the country knows we have barbed wire fences to keep livestock in. Then, my sister, made the comment that she just didn't feel right. I told her I also had a strange feeling. Not anything you could put your finger on. It could have been that we were out in the middle of nowhere and her car was acting so strange.

No sooner than we had discussed this that we saw hundreds of deer. They were not running across the road, they were lying down or standing. I actually remember looking right into the eyes of several of them, no fear. This is strange. Right after the deer, and I mean next to them, there were hundreds, maybe thousands of coyotes; they also were not scared, and they were not bothering the deer and the deer were not scared of them. We did notice, however, that they were not mingling. One had ended and the next group started. After the coyotes, were rabbits, thousands of rabbits, same thing, then after rabbits, which was the most awesome sight, were wolves, thousands of them, and they are suppose to be one of the scarcest of animals. And I do know the difference in coyotes and wolves. After the wolves were jackrabbits. We don't even have jackrabbits in this part of the country. After the jackrabbits was the last: it was a lone red-gold ram. It must have had a light on him of some kind, because he was off to the side. After the Ram, it started raining, pouring.

When it stopped raining, we came upon a sign that said Grandbury 8 miles. We had somehow missed two different road turns and had made it going 15 miles an hour from the time we left my house and stopping off in Waco for coffee (our coffee was still warm) in less than two hours.

I would love to hear from anybody who may have had a similar experience. It was just not me, alone; my sister also experienced this. To this day, I do not know why we didn't wake up my nephew, but we didn't. After it rained, my sister's car picked up speed, and it never did anything like that again. In fact, she took it to the shop, and they couldn't find a thing. We also called the local TV station to see if anyone had reported seeing animals in large numbers on the side of the road. No, they had not. Nor had they any reports of it raining anywhere. It was that time of year when rain is not a usual occurrence. It is so frustrating to have no answers. Especially if you are the type of person who wants an explanation for everything. I will say this: If it was not for my faith that night, I don't think I could have been so calm.
