Cloaked
Beings
by Wrath
I don’t know what the year was, but it was summertime in the 1980s. Me, my younger brother and our best friend late at night, we liked to watch the stars. About 4 a.m. every morning, what we thought were stars we found to be untrue. We would watch the stars fly off in formation. Some would fly straight up and vanish, some would blink out like someone just turned off a light, and some would fly parallel across the sky until they were out of sight. These so-called stars, an hour before, were just sitting in the sky as part of the constellations, but every night at exactly 4 a.m. they would fly out of formation. They would dance around the sky for a while and then vanish before the sun rises. So to make sure we weren’t seeing things, we watched our whole summer vacation from June to late August.
One night we realized we weren’t the only ones doing the watching. We suddenly realized that we were being watched. Out of the corner of my eye, I would see a little black shape would move from behind a tree or a car or what ever they could duck behind whenever I tried to look directly at them. It was like they were somehow cloaked, but I could catch them peeking out the corner of my eye. It was like a very slender black shadow silhouette about 4 feet in height. At first I thought I was going crazy or imagining the whole thing. My brother and my best friend were sitting on my father's custom conversion van to get a better view and I was watching from the ground. My brother and friend climbed down with a strange, frightened look on their faces. My friend was ready to go home, but he was to scared to walk by himself, so my brother and I walked with him. When I asked him what was wrong with him, he said he was seeing things and he didn’t want to watch the fake stars anymore.
From what he explained, he was seeing the same things that I saw, but only out the corner of our eyes could we see them. When we tried to look directly at them, they would quickly dip behind something or cloak. It was like they were trying to get closer to us each time we noticed them.
