Shadow at the Inn
by Roger

Here is my story of an interaction with a "shadow person." I heard this term recently for the first time, and it instantly connected with a very powerful past experience of mine which I have always called my ghost story. By way of background, I am now 58 and a successful CEO of several companies with an MBA and post graduate training in social sciences. I have also published a few research articles in journals as well. Therefore, I am not one who believes things without some level of evidence and rational objectivity.

While in college in 1967, I worked a summer job in Downingtown, PA (eastern PA). It was a very large modern motel (about 200+ rooms) with a first class restaurant known as the 1776 House (partly owned by Mickey Rooney at the time). There were about 30-40 restaurant employees, many of whom were college students like me. Since I was a hard worker, I was allowed to live in an old house owned by the Inn nearby for employees at very reasonable rent. It was about two miles away from the Inn on old Rt. 30, the main road to the state capital from Philly since Revolutionary War times. The old House is large stone building with about six bedrooms over three stories, with about six staff living there that summer.

The was a "legend" that the house had been vacant for many years following a brutal murder, and that the Inn bought it cheap. I never substantiated that. I did return about 15 years ago and the house now has a historical marker on it stating it is the oldest standing structure in Chester County, PA, and was formerly the Kings Inn. No doubt a lot of history at this house, but this wasn't known to any of us that summer in 1967.

In early July '67, I was in my room on a bright sunny Saturday afternoon. I had never had any discomfort or anxiety at this place and was having the best time of my life "socializing' with the attractive college girls I worked with. A fun time for a 20 year old. I remember the events clearly and precisely. I looked at my clock and it was 1 p.m. as I lay down on my bed and closed my eyes. Instantly I was flushed with extreme fear (the type of emotional reaction most would have to the famous shower scene in the movie Psycho). I had no idea why I felt this and had that thought as I opened my eyes.

Then, out of the wall, on this bright and sunny day, came a black shadow man with arms outstretched towards me. Its shape changed slightly as it left the wall and drifted toward me. It was a full torso, but I never looked at the lower part of it as it was about 6' tall. I uttered a gasp and again closed my eyes for an instant, as a fear reaction, but my eyes were closed long enough to think to myself that I must be dreaming and it won't be there when I open my eyes. I opened them again and it was still drifting toward me, the arms outstretched as if to choke me. I was paralyzed with fear and gave another and louder gasp. It came to within 3-4 feet of me, then dissipated.

I then looked at the clock and it was a minute after the event started. It have traveled about 8 feet from the wall to within 3' of me. I had not fallen asleep, had never used drugs, and have no explanation. However, a host of bad things happened to me in the following weeks, a serious car accident (unhurt), and other events that were potentially very harmful leading me to quit the job and move about 15 miles away. I always had a sense that the "entity" was evil and knew I was in the room and that I was its focus. I felt I had a brush with real evil that summer.

Many years later I would have two more experiences that involved hearing a voice, but these were positive and actually helpful events relative to things happening in my life at those times, and I believe these had no relationship to this "dark" event. I will leave those stories for another time.
