My Civil War Haunting
by Michelle E.
It seems that ever since I was a little girl, about every place I lived in was paranormal somehow or another. Believe me, this U.S. Foreign Service Brat has a lot of personal ghosts stories, but I am now living back in the U.S.A. for several years, and I have finally talked myself into sharing my present day story (which still has no ending, and probably never will).
I live in Manassas, Virginia. As taught in the history books, Manassas was the sight of the first battle of the U.S. Civil War - the battle of Bull Run. I live in a very old, but quaint house with my fiancé and his mother. Our backyard was once the sight of a Civil War Hospital, and I believe by word-of-mouth there are also supposed to be soldiers buried back there. I have heard and sensed spirits all around the woods in the back yard - especially at night.
On several occasions, when it is late at night, my fiancé and I can hear male voices outside our bedroom window. They seem to be conversing amongst each other, but when we look out the window, there is no one there. Sometimes when my fiancé starts to get a little upset because of the loud talking, he will investigate outside (I am too chicken to go along with him), and of course he finds nothing. What makes the little hairs on the back of my neck stand on end, is that the loud talking cannot be made out. It is as if the talking is "garbled."
I have also seen a dark silhouette of shadow/person. It was very scary! I was walking down the hall one night when I thought I was walking behind my to-be-mother-in-law. But all of a sudden, as I walked into the kitchen, what I thought was her zipped quickly through the side of the room. It zipped passed me again, and like warped speed - it ended up on the other side of the breakfast bar. I realized something was wrong. I ran very quickly to my to-be-mother-in-law's bedroom. She was sleeping the whole time! So, I thought maybe it was my fiancé, but he too was laying down in our bedroom. He couldn't believe how shaken I was.
Last of all, for now, the bathroom seems to have a spirit. Some nights, our pit bull, Athena barks at the corner of the bathroom. Other times while I am in there, Athena will whine at the corner, but she won't for the life of her enter the bathroom. One night, while I was taking a shower, I had the worst feeling come over me. I could feel someone or something watching me! I just knew "it" was sitting on the toilet just watching me! This feeling turned into a horrifying, threatening, almost evil feeling. I couldn't finish my shower without my fiancé pulling up a chair in the bathroom to soothe me; protect me. He laughed the whole time. My mother told me it was my guardian angel - that I shouldn't fear the feelings it made me feel. I disagree - a guardian angel would not make me feel so uncomfortable... would it?
