Inky Shadow People
by Lady Di

I was six years old back in October, 1969, and this was back when my family lived in our red brick house in Waukesha, Wisconsin. My dad had passed away about a year earlier, and I didn't know it at the time - didn't know it until recently, actually - my mom was suffering a bit of a nervous breakdown. So the "haunted house" I believed we had and grew up telling my friends about… well, I know now that much of that story was in truth my mother's delusions.

However, back then I was seven years old, which was old enough for me to remember what things I did, in fact, see with my own eyes. I don't know if my mom's mental state had drawn them, or if my dad's death had drawn them, but we did have these shadows come to our house. On one occasion, I remember sitting in our kitchen and seeing a large, inky shape glide past the kitchen window. It was a few feet outside the house, and I remember asking my mom who was also in the kitchen, "Do we have big birds?" I remember my mom looking startled, then rushing to the window to look. So I know in that case I saw something that she did not.

The other thing I remember very clearly to this day is being called to the front door by my mother. She was standing very still and quietly asked me to look out at our car and describe to her what I see. She didn't say a word to tell me what she saw, so I looked, and saw our white station wagon sitting in the driveway. It was running, and had two black, man-shaped shadows sitting inside, one behind the wheel, another beside it. And outside the driver side window was a third black shape. This one was smaller, legless, and hovered in the air beside the car's window, like a dog almost - in fact, that's what it reminded me of back then, a large black dog without legs or any clear detail. I described all this to my mother, who nodded slowly and then pushed me back into the house.

We left the house maybe a day later and fled what my mother told us were evil entities. I don't know honestly what to believe of that experience, but while we were fleeing from one motel to the next, in every motel we had a different strange thing happen, two of which I remember - a tug of war we (my mom, my brother and I) had with the door and an unseen something on the other side, preventing her from opening it, then all of a sudden that something letting go and the door flying open.

I remember this event too, quite clearly. But whether this was related to the black shadows phenomenon I saw in our house, I don't know. All seemed normal again when we returned to our house a week later, and I never saw the shadows after that. But then as an adult and in the fall of 1997, my husband and I visited a bed and breakfast my friend owned in Rapid City, South Dakota. He told us the house had a ghost. That night I saw out of the corner of my eye an inky, black shadow slip across his dining room floor and under the china cabinet. It looked exactly the same as the things I remember seeing outside our house in Wisconsin. And right after this, the hurricane lamp at the top of the cabinet started wobbling a little back and forth, as if someone heavy had just stomped by.
