Boy Soldier
by Leila M.

This string of events happened in April to June 1991 when I was 15 going on 16. We lived in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and my mum had decided to move from our old apartment into one closer to my school as it was much nicer, larger, and in a better neighborhood than the one we had been living in previously for ten years. Our new apartment was beautiful with high ceilings, French doors, old-fashioned glass-paned kitchen cupboards, and had an original, deep, enameled bath tub with claw feet! The building itself is named the "Royal Arms" and was probably built in the late 1910s-1920s. It is still there to this day. The janitor told my mother that it had been used for a time as an army barracks for soldiers going off to war.

As a 15-year-old girl who had always shared a room with her younger sister, I relished at the prospect of having my OWN ROOM! My bedroom was enormous and had a long walk-in closet. All my friends were jealous of it and so was my sister, who had drawn the short end of the stick and got the small bedroom off the kitchen. Now, how my room was laid out and where I put my belongings is relevant to later events. Coming from the hallway, if you stood in my doorway, directly in front of you would be the large window with the radiator directly underneath it, which my alarm clock had been placed upon. If you looked to the left of the window would be my bed against the wall (with the headboard directly beside the radiator) and my drawers at the foot of my bed with my black stereo on top of it against the wall as well. The door to my walk in closet was immediately to the left of the door to my room so they were side by side. To the right of my window, would be my dressing table and since I rode horses, I had my riding gear and riding boots along the right wall.

All went well in our new home for the first couple of weeks, until one day when my mother and my grandmother were sitting down in the living room watching TV one afternoon and BOTH of them saw a small, smoky, funnel-shaped mist swirly right beside my dog, who was lying on the floor! My dog didn't take any notice of this and kept on chewing her toy. It disappeared as quickly as it occurred.

A few weeks later, one of my mother's friends came over one evening with his guitar and a tape recorder containing a cassette with some songs he recorded. They were having a pleasant time listening to his music when the tape recorder started playing BOTH sides of his tape at the same time. That freaked him out as he said that he had NEVER had that happen before. He didn't stay very long after that.

Unfortunately, although that was the end of weird events for my mother, "it" turned its attention to me. Because it was late spring, early summer, it started to get light earlier, and although my alarm clock was always set for 7:00 a.m., I often woke up at about 6:50 a.m. to relax in bed before I had to get ready for school. This morning in June was probably one of the strangest wake up experiences I have EVER had!! I was in that twilight stage where you are just starting to wake up and are aware of your surroundings, but too lazy to get up fully. It wasn't the daylight coming in right beside my window that woke me up at 6:50, though, but a young man talking to me!

I remember in my hazy state looking at my clock, seeing what time it was, seeing the daylight coming through my window and then turning my head to look toward the end of my bed to see a handsome young guy in a khaki brown-ish colored uniform smiling laughingly at me! He was standing right beside my drawers and I could see my stereo and my pile of cassette tapes all neatly arranged on top of the drawers beside him. I will never forget what he looked like. He was caucasian, of slim-average build, probably about 5'9"- 5'11"ish (I am 5'9" and he looked a little taller than me), he had light golden-brown thick wavy hair that was parted. He looked to be a little older than me, in the 17- 19 age range, but not any older than that.

I do not know anything about army uniforms and have no interest in the subject, but it did not look like a modern day (1990s) uniform. Now, I had never had a boyfriend and definitely NEVER had a boy in my room, but I wasn't scared, more puzzled why there was a boy in my room, but I was too lazy and tired to get up. I just lay there in a daze listening to what he said. I knew at the time what he was saying, but as soon as my alarm clock rang, he instantly sank down quickly into the floor under my bed and I forgot everything that he had said! I got up and looked under my bed to see if he was there but, of course, he wasn't. The ony thing I can remember about "our conversation", was that he liked me and I got the feeling from him that had I been born in his time, that I could have been his "girl". That is all I remember about what he said, all the details are gone. Unfortunately after that pleasant experience, things got nasty.

Toward the end of June, I had just gotten into bed, put away my Walkman after listening to some music and had just closed my eyes to go to sleep. I don't know what made me open my eyes right away but FLOATING across my room along the right side wall, was one of my riding boots! Because I used to show horses, I kept these riding boots highly polished, and I could see the black leather and the shine of the boots reflecting the light that was coming through my window.

I was stunned. I couldn't believe my eyes. I didn't know what to do. Even now writing this, I feel the same terror as I did all those years ago. I threw the blankets over my head and SCREAMED for my mother. I screamed and screamed but because the building was old and had thick walls, she couldn't hear me but my sister did down the hall and she started screaming for my mother to come to me too. She came in and turned on the lights but, of course, my riding boots were right where they always had been, against the wall with my other horse stuff. I told her what had happened and she believed me and stayed with me that night in my room. We moved out shortly after just staying there three months!
