Fires of the Spirits
by Todd M.

In my hometown in Indiana, there's a legend that the townspeople try to keep quiet about a piece of property believed to be "cursed" by angry spirits who where murdered at this location a long time ago. In the 1800s, before there was a cure for tuberculosis, most individuals inflicted with this disease were separated from the general public, since it was contagious, and left to die. Right outside the city limits, out in the woods, a T.B. "camp" was set up for those with the disease. From what I was told, the epidemic was growing and in a desperate act to keep the disease from spreading, the town elders went to the T.B. camp one night and set it on fire, burning everyone there alive. You can see why they try to keep this part of our town's history a secret.

Many years after this tragedy, a family built a winery, along with an Italian restaurant to serve the wine they produced, on the property were the T.B. camp was located. After a couple of years in business, the winery and the restaurant burned to the ground; the cause and the source were never determined. The family decided to rebuild both the winery and restaurant on the same lot, and after it was completed, both buildings burned to the ground again. They tried one more time to resurrect their business on the same plot of land, again, after a few years, another fire took both buildings again. The family had had enough and decided to build their business in a different part of town and has had no trouble since. After the last fire, some of the family members disclosed that they had had enough, not because of the fires that took their business three different times, but because they said that there were small fires CONSTANTLY starting for no apparent reason in different parts of the winery and the restaurant. Could this have been the victims of the T.B. camp seeking revenge for what was done to them, or just some freak coincidence?
