Nissequogue Creature
by Chris Meister
This is a story about an odd, unexplainable creature my lady friend and I saw in the Nissequogue Nature Preserve, in Nissequogue, Long Island, NY. I decided to take my lady friend down through this nature preserve at around 2 a.m. because after a 10-minute walk in absolute darkness, we came upon the Long Island Sound, which looks beautiful, and you can see Connecticut across the water. So we ventured down there, stayed for a bit, then ventured back to get to my car and drive home.
When entering this nature preserve, there is a field on the right and left of the path before hitting the woods that lead around a pond and then eventually to the beach. The whole time we were walking, it was pitch black and a bit freaky, no street lights or any lights allowed in Nissequogue, to keep it old fashioned for the rich people, I guess. So on our way back, we got out of the woods and were on the path with a field on the right and left of us again. We were pretty much out of the preserve when I remembered that right near the entrance there's a bench to sit on.
So as we were walking, I was looking to the left to see the bench, and that is when I saw this thing. It appeared to be all white, was about 3½ feet tall, crouched on two legs (and eventually ran on two legs), had pointed ears, and a long tail. I did not see its face though. It was crouched half-way behind a bush when I first noticed it, then it leapt out to the side about five feet, then bolted backward at a pretty decent speed. Now, as it started running backward, was when it hit me that something weird was out here and I pulled at my lady, and she watched the rest of what it did with me.
As it ran into the field, about 30 feet away from us, it started leaping up and down, almost side to side, but it was leaping forward. If it was next to us, we estimate it would have been leaping about six or seven feet high. So what was this thing? The only logical explanation for me was a kangaroo, but I am no skeptic. If it was a kangaroo, it must have been an albino kangaroo. What are the odds of that? And who heard of kangaroos on Long Island? We only have deer, possums, raccoons, cats, mice and squirrels. If by any chance one of the millionaires around Niss. had a kangaroo and it got loose or something, then why was it running away on two legs, then almost leaping for fun when it all the way down the field?
I got a weird feeling from it, not so much evil, but not so much nice. Kind of like a Spring-Heeled Jack creature, scaring us, then leaping around afterwards satisfied with the scare. Whatever it was, I have a huge Mag-lite and we plan to go back in the next few nights and find it again.
