Niece Says Goodbye
by Belinda Powell

Okay, so here it is. Play by play. I feel as though I am going to lose my mind and not sure what to do. But here goes. I live in Carrollton, Texas. That is approximately 30 minutes from Fort Worth and 10-15 from Dallas. My niece, Mariah Bailey Tompkins, passed away on Saturday, August 18, 2007. She was in a terrible car accident the morning of August 17 and care-flown from Gainesville Hospital to Cook's Children Medical in Fort Worth. They pronounced her brain dead and called time of death at 8:40 a.m. Saturday morning. Her funeral was August 22, 2007.

Beginning Sunday night, early Monday morning August 27th is when the encounters began.

August 27th: 2:45AM - My nine-month-old woke up for a bottle around 2:30 a.m. I fed him and then brought him to bed with us around 2:45. He wasn't going back to sleep and in fact was lying there sucking his pacifier and looking up at the ceiling. The ceiling fan was going and there were no lights on the house anywhere. No shadows coming through the window. He started smiling as he looked up, shaking his head no. He did this three times and I looked at him and said, "You need to go to sleep." Then he looked to his left, took out his pacifier and started laughing. He put the pacifier back in his mouth, moved his head like he was following an object toward the door, which was to our right. He pulled himself up and pulled his pacifier out of his mouth and waived bye bye and said, "Bye bye." I freaked out and woke up my husband said, "Baby, I have to tell you this now because you won't believe me in the morning." I told him what happened. He thought I was nuts until Keegan started smiling, looking up at the fan and shaking his head no again and then he did the same thing following to the door and sat up and waived bye bye. We were both freaked and decided to get up and go into the living room and rock him back sleep.

August 27th: 11:45PM - My husband and I were lying in bed. Keegan, our nine-month-old was sleeping in his playpen in our room near the window. Our bedroom door was open and from there you can see into the living room and into the formal dining room. Well, while lying there my husband said, "Did you see that?" I said, "See what?" He said it was a light flash, like a bright light - a bright white light. He said it was similar to a camera flash, but was bright like a strobe. I told him no and said it was probably a passing car or something. So after that I lay on my right side facing him and looking out into the rooms while we were talking. It happened again and this time I saw it as well as him. He was right. It was a bright white light that flashed like twice - quickly. I freaked out and jumped up and said there has to be an explanation. I went out into the living room and into the dining room and looked around. My two teenagers were upstairs sleeping. The house was completely quiet. I checked out the windows to see if it was possible for it to have been passing cars, but a few passed and it wasn't it. I checked the bulbs in the dining room and they weren't bright enough to have been them. There was absolutely no explanation that could be found. We don't own strobe lights or a camera with a flash that would be like that. So I went back into bed. Scott, my husband, and I lay back down and stared out into the living room trying to figure out what it could be, when, about five minutes later the living room light went on by itself! It stayed on for about five seconds and went off. The light switch is the type that has to be turned to turn it off and on and it was in the off position. We were both freaked out at this point and checked the light and the cord and everything. About that time Keegan woke up.

August 29th: 2:45 - 3:00 a.m. - I just got finished feeding Keegan and lay down with him in our bed. Right about that time, Scott asked, "Do you smell that? I smell perfume." I told him I didn't. About 30 seconds later, I smelled it. I got goose bumps because it was the same smell my niece had when I kissed her forehead goodbye and I could smell her hair. I began to cry and told Scott about the smell. He just said there is no way, but then after what we saw earlier, he doesn't doubt anything.

September 1st: 2:45 - 3:00 a.m. - I finished feeding Keegan, started from the living room to the bedroom when the flash of light we saw days before appeared right next to me on the left side in front of the fireplace. I took off running scared to death into the bedroom and started crying, waking up my husband and told him what happened. He got up, closed our bedroom door and locked it. We were trying to figure out what this means. Right before that happened, the dogs started barking a little bit. Wasn't sure if this was just a coincidence. The dogs are not kept in the house.

September 1st: 8:30 p.m. - We had friends over and were sitting at our table in the kitchen. As we were sitting there the light, which was on, became twice as bright and stayed that way. I joked about it and said, "I bet when we turn it off it will burn out because bulbs sometimes do that. When I turned off the light and back on, it stayed the same brightness. Our friends were witness to this.

It is now September 4th and have not had anymore occurrences as of yet. I want to know if this could be my niece. What should I do? Should I try to talk to her? I am seriously freaked out, but at the same time want to help her if that is what she needs. She and my daughter were cousins and the best of friends. Every night now I lock our bedroom door and am scared of going out into the living area during the night. Even though I have to go out there to get Keegan's bottle and feed him. I feel like I am being watched. By the way, the accident happened at 2:45 in the morning on August 17, 2007.

Since I first emailed this, I have now had more happenings. Saturday morning, September 8, 2007 at about 5:00 a.m., my nine-month-old once again did the looking at the ceiling and around the bedroom shaking his head and laughing with his pacifier in his mouth and waving bye to the door. This lasted about 5-10 minutes. I woke my husband to witness it. I kept the bedroom door open for the night instead of closing it like I had been, just to see if anything would happen.

Sunday, September 9, 2007, at approximately 10:45 p.m., my family and I were in the living room watching the rest of the Dallas Cowboys game when the lamp came on by itself and turned off about two minutes later on its own. Scott turned that light off around 9:30 p.m. while I was giving Keegan his bottle.

Monday morning, September 10 (this morning) Keegan woke up about 3:20 a.m. and started the head shaking laughing thing again, waving bye. Once again I kept the bedroom door open. I will begin keeping the door shut again to our bedroom.
