The Easter Guests
by Anastasia Saidova
This story was told by my mum about what had happened to her grandma (my great-grandmother) during the World War. She was Russian and lived in a small village. This was a during a great hunger, so the only way the small village managed to survive was thanks to the one cow my grandma owned.
One day during Easter morning, a knock came on the door. My great-grandma opened it and saw three men. She described them as very old, with beards, dressed in some really old clothing (something like a simple material draped on and tied with ropes). One of them was leaning on a long wooden stick. They asked her if they could come in and have something to eat. She allowed them to come in, but was really embarrassed to give them only a jug of milk and a few pieces of dry bread. There was nothing else she had.
When they finished, they thanked her and one of them said, "Everything is going to be alright." With that they left.
My great-grandma closed the door after them and went back to clear the table. To her surprise, the food stood there untouched, as if she just had put it there. She ran outside, but the visitors weren't there. She even asked people who where walking by, but they said that they didn't see anyone at all.
Soon, the war stopped. It is said in an Orthodox legend (and she was Orthodox) that during Easter a Doctrine of the Trinity (three angels) come down to earth to watch us. I don't know whether it was them or not, but it seemed pretty similar to that.
