Hero Dog's Ghost
by Bonnie Hansen
In 2002, I went to a picnic where I struck up a conversation with a retired police lieutenant. I prodded him for stories about his experiences during his career. He related many tales, and then I asked what was the strangest experience he had had. And he told me this:
There was a strange dog who ran up to someone who was outside in their yard. The dog just kept barking. The man felt like the dog wanted him to follow and so he did. They went down the road and the dog led him to a car that had gone off of the road. In a ditch was the driver, unconscious and obviously in bad shape, still in the front seat of the car. The man ran back to the house where he called the police and reported the incident.
When the police arrived, the dog was dead in the back seat. So it was the dog in ghost or spirit form that went to get help for his master. The man the dog ran to for help verified that the dog was identical in looks to the one who came to alert him, and that he didn't see the dog in real form again once he went back to call for help.
