Ghostly Bath
by Jessica H.

I'm one of those people who can be extremely skeptic... but I'm a major scaredy cat. I panic a little if left in the dark after watching a scary movie, and I tend to let my imagination get the best of me when I'm alone or it's late. I can make small noises an invading army or a whisper a screeching poltergeist. However, when it comes to Ouija boards and séances, I was the friend that moved the indicator or pretended to be possessed. Oh yes. I terrified many of my friends during my slumber parties!

While I still remain skeptical of some things, the idea of spirits or ghosts was proven to me when I was in the first grade. It began about a week after my mother and I moved into our new house in Ohio. I was about seven years old, and was down at my new friend's house after school. Apparently, my mother was in our spare bedroom, which she was converting into a computer room, when she heard a squeaking sound and then rushing water. She went into the bathroom across the hall, and the bathtub handles were turned on full force. The tub was plugged and it was filling up. My mother, who is a firm believer in the paranormal, shrugged and went back to the computer room. After a few minutes, she heard the water turn off and what sounded like splashing in the tub. I guess about half an hour later, the tub was unplugged and the water emptied.

Of course, I wasn't there for this, but a few months later, before I had even heard about the ghostly bath, my friend Kaylie stayed the night with me. At the time, I had a huge waterbed that took up almost all of my room. When you sit up and face the door, you look directly into my vanity mirror. That night I woke up out of nowhere and sat up quickly, completely wide awake. I didn't hear anything, and it was dark, but because of the railroad depot behind my house and the many bright lights, I was able to see pretty clearly.

In my mirror, sitting next to me, I could see a little girl a few years younger than I, maybe four or five. (I was seven.) She was very pretty, with long curly dark hair and a tiny striped sailor dress on. The image I saw was in black and white, but the picture in my head was of black hair, honey colored eyes, a red bow and the dress being blue and white. (If that makes any sense....) She wore a gold locket with an "L" on it, and I whispered the name "Lila." I don't know why the name came to me, but when I said it, she gave me kind of a half smile.

I turned around to wake Kaylie up, but when I turned back, she was gone. Kaylie thought I was dreaming, but the next weekend she stayed the night again and this time she was the one to wake me up. Directly in front of my bed is a large window, and you could see the outline of a small girl, from just past her shoulders up, walking back and forth across the window. It was nothing more than a shadow, but you could see the side of her body, the long curly hair, and a bow on the top of her head. Kaylie believed me then, and since has experienced her own encounters.

We still speak of Lila sometimes, although neither of us has seen or heard from her since then. I don't know if it is Lila, or someone else, but our house continues to get some activity. Keys, silverware, dishes, and even jewelry have come up missing for months, only to reappear on the couch, under the dinning room table, or caught between the main door and the screen. (A door that is used daily.) Also, while working at Subway while still in high school, I was opening the store at about 7:00 am. Until the store opens at 10, no one is in there except the opener. I was making the bread, when I heard the bathroom door close, and a women's voice clearly call out "Hello?" I had yet to even turn the radio on, and the next employee didn't come in until 11:00, an hour after opening. I didn't feel anything too scary from the ghost, but I was extremely freaked out, and deliriously happy when I had my first customer.
