Haunted Hideout
by Ol' Grumpy

We've lived in our present home for over 30 years now, and only the past quarter of that time, in my estimation, have I believed I have experienced occurrences that it is indeed haunted to a degree,or at least, began experiencing some rather eerie happenings. I believe our home was built in the 1920s, and an old neighbor told us, a young school teacher had purchased it as it was being constructed, married her sweetheart, a bus driver, and they lived here until they either died,or were put in rest homes. It was a rental for a few years, I have no idea how many different families lived in it, but after we began renting in the early 1970s, the landlady offered us a good deal to buy it, and of course, we took her up on her offer.

The attic was just that: an old, bare, cobweb-filled portion of the house when we began buying, and over the years, we finished it, and it is now my "hideout"... It's like a huge den, I have all my mementos and hobby items in it, my sleeping quarters (I work nights, thus prefer the dark and quiet attic for sleeping days). I don't know for sure when I first began "noticing" odd things, but it was several years ago.

One night, I had just laid down, wasn't even dozing yet, and I KNOW I felt a gentle hand lightly caress my hair. I froze for a moment, not knowing what to make of it, but then realized, whatever it was, it was as if meant to be gentle, almost in a loving, caring way. Another night, again, just lay down and flipped out the light, no where near asleep yet, and I literally felt the foot of the bed sink, like someone, adult size, had just sat down on it! I held my breath, heart pounding, and after a brief moment, the mattress raised back up, and nothing more. Since that time, while in the attic, I can hear what distinctly sounds like fairly heavy footsteps traversing from front to back of the house downstairs, like what would remind me of boots walking across bare hardwood floors. Only thing is, I'm alone in the house, and the floors are fully carpeted, with thick pads underlayment. There have been a few times, I'd swear I've heard muffled voices from downstairs, and have even gone to see if someone had entered the house. But, always, no one there, and I even check to see if radios or TV were left on. They never are.

Perhaps the most common, is I periodically 'feel' the bed shake, and it always reminds me of when my old dog used to come to lay by my bed at night, and clumsily bump into it, as she'd curl to lie down. This has happened many times, enough force, that it actually causes the bed to jiggle a bit. My wife has said she notices a scent once in awhile, says it reminds her of the aftershave her late father used to wear. I even caught a whiff of it a couple times. The scent hangs heavy for a few moments, then POOF, no trace of it whatsoever! Lastly, I have notice the past few years, there appears to be some kind of "smoke" in some of the snapshots we take at home. Never in pics taken outdoors, or other places, only here at home.
