Back in the middle of December, 2002, one of the regular contributors to our Paranormal Forum, ElginB, started a thread in which readers were invited to post their predictions for 2003. Great idea, ElginB!

Readers were asked to provide predictions in eight categories:

• Best World Event
• Worst World Event
• Best National Event (US)
• Worst National Event (US)
• Greatest Scientific Discovery/Invention/etc.
• Awards Predictions (Oscars/Grammies/Nobel Prize)
• Surprise Prediction
• Other Predictions

(Note: I omitted "Personal Predictions" as a category for the purposes of this project because they would be difficult to verify.)

Several readers responded with some very interesting predictions, some of which are reprinted below. I'd like to extend the invitation to get more predictions from lots more people. Go to the Forum and post what you think will take place this year. You don't have to make a prediction in every category. The deadline for making predictions is January 31. Then at the end of 2003, we'll revisit this thread and see how many predictions came true.

Here are some predictions already posted:

Best World Event

• Anti-war protests and other non-violent activism will postpone invasion of Iraq until at least March. (EginB)
• They find out bin Laden is dead and this weakens Al-Queda. (PETA3)
• China will open up. (JESSOFDAWN)
• Israel and Palestine agree that each has the right to exist in secure, viable states. (johnnymac)
• 12 rainbows caught on film in the same place at one time. (MALEFICIA)
• Peace will come in the form of a child. (GUINEVEREA)
• No matter how bad things might get the world will not end and life will go on. (QUITTINGWORK)
• We will survive. (Heart)

Worst World Event

• A Neo-Nazi group will successfully assassinate either the French or Brazilian president. I'm leaning more towards Brazil right now. (QUITTINGWORK)
• An upgrade of terrorist activity. Few countries will get through the year without being touched. They hit Spain. Something big will happen in the to an American ally on the 13th November or the 10th of August. (PETA3)
• There will be more terrorism in 2003, but, ironically, this will take a back seat compared to what Mother Nature has in store for us all over the world. (GRUMPYRHONDA)
• Portland, Oregon, there seems a possibility that there will be an attack upon a oil storage facility there that will be in tandem with other attacks against oil storage facilities nation wide that will be less successful. (Heart)
• A terrorist attack that will shake the foundation of human existence. (GUINEVEREA)
• Millions of people die in sub-Saharan Africa from famine. (johnnymac)
• Six women wear the Hope Diamond for two months each; afterward, each woman suffers the horrific curse of the hope diamond, violent family deaths, horrible accidents, bankruptcy, and some women meet their own demise, proving that the curse is real. Yet, scientists and scholars have still not determined the hope diamond as a true curse, but only circumstantial. (MALEFICIA)
• Iran will reveal its nuclear program to the world and will refuse to abide by any non-proliferation treaties. As the UN Weapons Inspectors fail to find evidence of WOMADs in Iraq, Russia and Iran will stand against the U.S. by threatening war if the U.S. invades Iraq without UN approval. (EginB)
• Massive earthquake in Japan late in the year; a great explosion in a mining operation in Australia near Canberra. (Heart)
• We will not capture Osama bin Laden; his son Saad will play a more obvious, significant role in Al-Queda's deeds. (Heart)
• Iraq will fall (probably before the end of next November); Saddam Hussein will escape to parts unknown. (Heart)
• There will be small nuclear accident in a Russian nuclear facility. (Heart)

Best National Event (US)

• Water from the Great Lakes will be used to alleviate drought-stricken areas of the US. (QUITTINGWORK)
• Jimmy Carter announces a new bid for president. (EginB)
• A major hurricane will die out before land fall. (GUINEVEREA)

Worst National Event (US)

• Major act of terrorism inside the US will spark extreme, political changes. (QUITTINGWORK)
• Terrorist will bomb US, but from the inside. It will go for about 2-3 days around the country. Like gas stations being blown up all over the place. (JESSOFDAWN)
• The Bush Administration becomes scandal-ridden and his popularity drops severely, but Bush refuses to make any compromises. (EginB)
• Tornados will increase causing billions of dollars in damage, but no lives will be lost. (GUINEVEREA)
• Devastating earthquake on the northwest coast. (BONTONBERRY)
• The world will have to contend with the economic collapse of the United States shortly after the fall of Iraq. (Heart)
